Across large parts of the world, especially in the Americas and Europe, people have been partying for days in carnivals and other festivals leading up to the Christian festival of Lent - a burst of hedonism before what is traditionally a time of self-denial. This culminated last Tuesday in the final day of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil, the famous Mardia Gras celebrations in New Orleans, USA, and numerous other carnivals around the world.
