It's a strange thing to gaze on a pot in which royalty once emptied their bowels. But that is the experience on offer at the Bourdaloue Museum of Munich, which contains a collection of more than 2,000 specimens of the humble chamber pot and spans over two millennia.

Some of these containers are fabulously decorated, others dumpy and practical. And some very refined bottoms indeed have graced yet more. The collection is a humorous stop in a chain of excellent museums in Munich, but one that may leave you feeling a little soiled.
