North Sentinel Island, India

Don’t expect to see a “Welcome to North Sentinel Island” sign any time soon. The 200 or so inhabitants of this small tropical isle in the Bay of Bengal are among the last remaining people on earth to be untouched by modern civilization. And with good reason: Repeated attempts to contact the Sentinelese have been met with spear-throwing, arrow-shooting aggression, to the point that the regional government has given up on pursuing further dialogue. A grounded ship was reportedly threatened by locals in 1981, a pair of fishermen were killed in 2006, and a government helicopter sustained arrow fire that same year. The island’s pristine reefs and beaches may be to die for, but not literally …
